Doc Martin star Martin Clunes will play Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a new three-part ITV drama.
Arthur & George is adapted from the novel by Julian Barnes that is based on a series of true events during the author's life.
'Arthur & George explores what we think we know about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's life. It's a fascinating insight into the man who was to become one of the most famous of his age,' said Steve November, ITV's Director of Drama.
The series is set in 1903 in Staffordshire, Hampshire and London, as well as Conan Doyle's family home Undershaw in Surrey. The writer is sulking and a bore following the death of his wife, but then becomes involved in investigating the case of solicitor and reverend's son George Edalji. George has served seven years in Pentonville Prison for mutilating animals and sending threatening letters, with the offences now dubbed The Great Wyrley Rippings.
Also explored is Conan Doyle's association with the younger Jean Leckie, who he had a platonic relationship with while his first wife was alive, and whom he eventually married.
