Miles Dewey Davis III (Alton (Illinois), 26 mei 1926 – Santa 
Monica (Californië), 28 september 1991) was een Amerikaans 
jazzcomponist, trompettist en multi-instrumentalist. Hij wordt 
door verschillende deskundigen beschouwd als één van de 
meest invloedrijke, vernieuwende en originele muzikanten 
van de twintigste eeuw. Davis speelde naast onder anderen 
Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington en John Coltrane een grote 
rol in de geschiedenis van de jazz. Hij speelde verschillende 
stijlen, waaronder bop, cool jazz, modale jazz en jazzrock-
fusion. Miles was een spil in de ontwikkeling van de laatst-
genoemde drie stijlen. Als gevolg hiervan wordt Miles the 
Picasso of jazz genoemd. De stijl van Davis is herkenbaar en 
origineel en oefent tot op decennia na zijn overlijden invloed 
uit op jazzmusici. Op een deel van zijn opnames gebruikte 
David een harmon mute, een type demper waarmee hij het 
typische timbre creëerde dat tijdens de rest van zijn carrière 
direct met hem geassocieerd bleef worden. Ook zijn klank en 
speelstijl zonder de mute is herkenbaar, onder meer door de 
typische afbuigingen aan het begin of eind van de tonen en 
de ingehouden lyrische speelstijl met lange stiltes tussen de 
melodische frasen.
