Despite the self-congratulatory air to him, there is no denying that Mick Hucknall could once write hooks that sank deep into the brain, basslines that controlled your knees and songs that succeeded in his stated aim of giving you a "warm, gooey feeling". Since the mid-Nineties, though, the material has been a bit same-old. 


But finding himself back in the studio 30 years after the release of Simply Red's debut album, Hucknall appears to have got some of his mojo back, with added sincerity. Big Love sees the former Lothario expressing appreciation for the merits of enduring, family love. The title track is a slow-twirl for wedding anniversaries - complete with harp - on which Hucknall finds himself "falling in love again" with "the very same girl I have known for year after year".

Meanwhile, Dad is a moving tribute to the father who raised him after his mother left the family when he was three: you can forgive the soppiness. But the tack is back on Love Gave Me More on which Hucknall has added a (possibly French) female vocalist moaning and poutily begging for more. When it comes to that sort of thing in 2015, less is more, Mick.
