Denmark has been providing the world with top-tier metal for years. Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, and Artillery hail from there, and today the young band Speedslut aspires to join that ranks. Their debut album, "Cimbrian Rites," demonstrates that the quartet has mastered the lessons of classic speed metal, thrash, and the first wave of black metal. Instead of chasing modern trends, the Danes focus on grime, speed, and uncompromising energy.
Speedslut is a true breath of fresh air in the Danish metal scene. Everything points to the birth of a new star with the potential to reach far beyond the borders of their home country. The band has been active for only three years, and on June 26th, they released their debut album, "Cimbrian Rites." It's one of the most pleasant surprises of 2026. The musicians play with such ease and confidence, as if they'd been around for decades. Fasten your seatbelts—we're in for a wild ride.

The cover alone evokes classic black metal releases. Fortunately, the album's content is primarily an explosive blend of heavy, speed, and thrash metal. The album's greatest strength lies in its brilliant riffs. The guitars cut like a chainsaw, and the solos remain melodic without losing their ferocious nature. The rhythm section never lets up, making "Cimbrian Rites" a joy to listen to.

The production maintains the right amount of rawness, yet is transparent enough to bring out all the hidden flavors within the compositions. It's hard not to admire the energy, ferocity, and naturalness that emanates from this material. The album sounds as if it were created in the mid-1980s. The guitar duo Klitte/Dikinis doesn't experiment or blindly follow trends. Instead, they focus on aggression, speed, and the pure joy of playing. Every riff and every solo are a true feast for classic metal fans.

Frederik Klitte's vocals are also noteworthy, perfectly fitting the band's style. They're rough, brash, and full of punk-inspired swagger, perfectly complementing the merciless instrumentation. The whole thing exudes authenticity and feels like it was recorded in the golden age of metal. I love this type of vocals—full of aggression, charisma, and ferocity. At times, they're reminiscent of the first albums by Slayer or Kreator. Frederik wreaks havoc and takes no prisoners.

From the very first seconds of "Pestridden Stallions," it's clear there's no room for respite. The band attacks with sharp riffs, a blistering tempo, and a raw sound reminiscent of Motörhead, early Bathory, Exciter, or the first Sodom albums. However, this isn't about mindlessly copying legends. Speedslut utilizes classic influences, giving them their own aggressive character. It's a powerful opening that perfectly foreshadows what awaits the listener on the rest of the album.

The band doesn't slow down for a moment. Their second single, " Asbestos Born Wrath, " is a real killer – catchy, melodic, and incredibly energetic. A great balance between speed and thrash metal can also be found in " Dark Night Riders ." The Danes consistently stick to their chosen style without losing their freshness or enthusiasm.

Motörhead fans should especially enjoy " Into the Grave ." Its fast tempo, classic riff, and motor-paced sound, reminiscent of Lemmy and company's best albums, make it another strong point of the set. The excitement continues with " No One Escapes Death," which again incorporates numerous thrash metal elements. The band plays with passion and impressive self-confidence. " Stench of Evil," on the other hand, offers a slightly heavier and darker atmosphere, demonstrating the musicians' ability to build tension even in slower passages.

The album's finale doesn't disappoint. " Armageddon " and " Whores of Speed " are true anthems for underground metal fans – full of catchy choruses, unbridled energy, and old-school spirit. The title track, " Cimbrian Rites," is a perfect culmination. It's the most extended and epic track on the album, demonstrating Speedslut's ability to transcend the simple formula of playing at full throttle, where speed is the only thing that matters.

"Cimbrian Rites" doesn't attempt to reinvent speed metal. It's a sincere tribute to the genre's golden age, where great riffs, energy, and an uncompromising approach to music are paramount. Fans of modern music might complain about the lack of innovation, but fans of Hellripper, Venom, Motörhead, or classic Exciter will surely find everything they expect from pure speed metal here.

This is one of those debuts that reminds us that the spirit of the old school is still alive and well. Speedslut has made a phenomenal start, and I will be following the band's future with great interest. "Cimbrian Rites" is a true gem that deserves the attention of every classic metal fan.
