Omschrijving
Folk, jug band, ragtime, swing, Boston.
Het deed me denken aan de Pokey Lafarge van 10 jaar geleden. Erg leuk.
Jim Kweskin is the founder of the legendary 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band with Fritz Richmond, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, Mel Lyman & Bruno Wolfe. During the 5 yrs they were together, they transformed the sounds of pre-WWII rural music into a springboard for their good-humored performances.
Jim Kweskin and Berlin Hall Saturday Night Revue (from the album Doing Things Right available on Jalopy Records)
Never resting comfortably on a stellar career that can be traced back to the Harvard Square/Cambridge, Mass. Folk music heydays, Jim Kewskin (at 84 years old) becomes a musical time-traveler on his recent release, Doing Things Right. The album champions music from the same ‘fun side of Folk music’ that Jim explored in the 1960’s with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Pre-War songs in Folk, Blues, and Jug Band music as well as other genres that have faded into the mists of history. On Doing Things Right, Jim Kweskin is backed by the Berlin Hall Saturday Night Revue, a group that includes producer/bassist and frequent collaborator Matthew Berlin as well as 5x Grammy award winner Cindy Cashdollar. The album opens with a Western Swing tune, “Four or Five Times”, originally performed by Byron Sturges in 1927.
Much like a variety show, Doing Things Right is a spinning shuffle of styles, shown contemporary love by Jim Kweskin as he and the band revisit, and revive, refresh decades old songs. When offering a tune from the 1935 movie The Night is Young, Jim Kweskin and company put a back alley Jazz rhythm underneath Oscar Hammerstein’s “When I Grow Too Old to Dream”. The group lovingly cradles “Mona Lisa” with a bouncing beat as Jim Kweskin lands down in New Orleans to boogie with on a Bourbon Street parade version of “Mardi Gras Mambo” as the band strut like its Saturday night for “Show Me the Way to Go Home” and take a moment for a slow-roll toke in “Viper Mad”. Doing Things Right confesses “I Get the Blues When It Rains”, urged on by acoustic finger-picking as the album hops on a tangle of guitar strings to bid goodbye to a cheating lover in “Farewell Daddy Blues”. Jim Kweskin and Berlin Hall Saturday Night Revue promise “We’ll Meet Again”, ponder “What’ll I Do”, and give in to hard-won realities for “I’ll Sail My Ship Alone” as they exit Doing Things Right with a shuffle in “Right or Wrong”.
