Arne - Overtures (Standage)

Most famous for setting "Rule, Britannia!" to music, the Englishman Thomas Arne also wrote a handful of symphonies wonderfully recorded by Cantilena under Adrian Sheperd's direction, as well as these overtures from various stage productions. Musically, I actually prefer these works to the symphonies. Buoyant and delightfully performed by Collegium Musicum 90 conducted by Simon Standage, they often are highly reminiscent of the symphonies of Arne's almost exact contemporary William Boyce. If you're looking for some late Baroque to early Classical orchestral music that's distinctive but pleasant rather than grandly heroic, this would be a great place to start after the aforementioned Boyce compositions.
