Esther Phillips, geboren als Esther Mae Jones, (Galveston, 23 december 1935 - Los Angeles, 7 augustus 1984) was een Amerikaanse zangeres, die naast blues ook jazz, country, soul en disco zong.

In 1949 was Esther Mae Jones deelneemster bij een talentenjacht in de Barrelhouse Club van Johnny Otis in Los Angeles. Otis was zo onder de indruk, dat hij haar contracteerde voor zijn revue The California Rhythm and Blues Caravan, waar ze optrad als Little Esther.

In 1950 had ze met haar zangkwartet The Robins haar eerste hit Double Crossin' Blues. Nog in hetzelfde jaar lukten haar een hele reeks grote r&b-hits, waaronder Mistrustin' Blues, Misery, Cupid Boogie, Deceivin' Blues, Wedding Boogie en Far Away Blues (Xmas Blues). In 1952 volgde Ring-A-Ding-Doo. Na haar afscheid van Otis verminderde het succes.

In 1962 werd Little Esther herontdekt door Kenny Rogers. Vanaf dan trad ze op onder de artiestennaam Esther Phillips en had ze met Release Me een top 10-hit in de popcharts en een nummer 1-hit in de r&b-charts. The Beatles nodigden haar uit naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waar ze een eigen tv-show kreeg. Tijdens het midden van de jaren 60 stond ze onder contract bij Atlantic Records, waar ze enkele successen had met And I Love Him (1965) en When a Woman Loves a Man (1966). Toen al vocht Phillips reeds met haar heroïneverslaving.

In 1972 verscheen het album From a Whisper to a Scream, dat werd genomineerd voor een Grammy Award. De prijs ging echter naar Aretha Franklin, die deze echter, als blijk van bewondering, overhandigde aan Phillips. Tot dit moment stond ze onder contract bij Kudu Records van Creed Taylor, een sublabel van CTI Records. In 1975 had ze daar met een disco-versie van de klassieker What a Difference a Day Makes van The Dorsey Brothers en een versie van Dinah Washington, een verdere wereldwijde hit. Eind 1976 lukte haar met Magic's in the Air / Boy, I Really Tied One on een verder top 5-succes in de Amerikaanse disco-charts. Ook daarna nam ze nog enkele songs op in deze stijl, echter een groter succes bleef uit.

Ze werd vaak vergeleken met Nina Simone, alhoewel ze Dinah Washington aangaf als haar voorbeeld. In totaal had Phillips over een periode van 33 jaar 19 hits in de Amerikaanse r&b-charts.

Phillips kreeg vier Grammy-nominaties in de category Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance – Female voor: Set Me Free (1970), From a Whisper to a Scream (1972), Alone Again (Naturally) (1973) en What a Diff'rence a Day Makes (1975).

Esther Phillips overleed in augustus 1984 op 49-jarige leeftijd aan lever- en nierfalen ten gevolge van haar heroïne- en alcoholverslaving.
