Unsuk Chin - 3 Concertos

Immediately this disc explodes into action with the start of Unsuk Chin’s high-octane piano concerto, in which she plays around a lot with rhythms. Often multiple different rhythms are operating simultaneously, where the piano generally is the quickest and being used as a kind of percussion instrument, like a xylophone. Although basically a single piece, it’s divided up into four movements, probably to give the musicians including large percussion section the odd moment of respite. Amid the poly-rhythmic brilliance, the second movement also has some quieter music, for example during its single tempo andante opening. This concerto is the first of three 20-30 minute compositions commissioned by various events/orchestras and collected for this release on Deutsche Grammophon’s venerable yellow label. A good reference point for this and other discs featuring Unsuk Chin’s works is the music of György Ligeti.
