Belgium based US musician and Berklee graduate Laura Cortese is a decade and a half into a pretty impressive recording career. Having started out as a fiddle-centric folkster, her sound has grown with each record and new life experience. Having, like so many others, delayed the release of her latest studio record, Bitter Better, which sees her team up with her band The Dance Cards, she has profited greatly from the increased exposure of the striking singles that have teased the release.

With nearly half of the album's eleven songs already in the public domain, fans will already be aware of the stunning indie pop of Dreaming providing a real radio friendly anthem, the lush From The Ashes harks back to the definitive soulful folk sound that has to date defined her career. Somewhere between Shelby Starner and Jewel, From The Ashes shows that power does not need to come from big bold statements.

Although folk and pop are the key sounds on Bitter Better, the group have ensured they haven't placed any limitations on their sonic influences or direction. Where The Fox Hides has a far more Classical leaning, while Typhoon brings Country to the fore. However, these are sounds used to help shape their own far more distinctive and clear sound.

All in all Bitter Better is the album Laura Cortese has been building steadily towards over an already notable recording career. Having shown the diversity of her sound and ability over the course of her back catalogue, it all culminates in what is essentially her most commercial release to date.
