Donavon Frankenreiter – AKA the best moustache in surfing – has released a new album entitled: The Heart.
The record marks a full decade since Frankenreiter added ‘singer-songwriter’ to his resume, subsequently cementing himself as every teenage surfer’s go-to road-trip sound.
This new album however, reflects Donavon’s personal evolution over the last ten years. This time round, he’s reaching for a greater intimacy from within his music and employing a more sober approach.
“I went into this album saying I wanted to make songs I love,” he explains. “I feel like it’s where I’m at, 42 years old. Every one of these songs means a lot to me. “
“All these songs are as close to me singing from the heart as I can,” he said.
Recorded in Wimberley, Texas, surrounded by nothing but the wild southern air and the odd cow getting a look at the action through the window, Donavon’s recording sessions were streamed live online, a tool that was craftily used to convey the intense emotion attached to the album.
 
The 42-year-old American has been lurking in different areas of the international surf scene for close to thirty years now.  Iconic for his steezy bottom turn and relaxed style that translates into the musical vibrations he creates, he’s now become a household name thanks to his trademark surfer/musician skillset.

Yet, the changes in the man and the music seek to tap into something a little more emotional. Something a little more intense and something a little more connected to the essence of humanity. As the product of personal tragedy and success, The Heart delivers a new level of complexity and weight to anything we have seen from Donavon before.
