Geheim agent Harry Palmer - de brildragende en working class antipool van James Bond - komt ttv de Koude Oorlog in actie als blijkt dat een groot aantal westerse geleerden z'n biezen heeft gepakt. Wat is de oorzaak van deze 'brain drain'. Regisseur Furie vond het reuze artistiek om zo vaak mogelijk van camerastandpunt te wisselen. Storend, vonden veel critici, maar het aardige is dat z'n procédé inmiddels een tamelijk moderne indruk maakt. Na The Ipcress File volgden nog twee sequels: Funeral in Berlin (van Guy Hamilton) en Billion Dollar Brain (van Ken Russell), steeds met Caine in de hoofdrol.

The Ipcress File is a 1965 British espionage film directed by Sidney J. Furie, starring Michael Caine and featuring Guy Doleman and Nigel Green. The screenplay by Bill Canaway and James Doran was based on Len Deighton's novel, The IPCRESS File (1962). It has won critical acclaim and a BAFTA award for best British film. In 1999 it was included at number 59 on the BFI list of the 100 best British films of the 20th century.
