Jerry Lee Lewis - 1989 - Rare Tracks





When this CD was issued in 1989, almost all of these cuts had become rare. These are songs from the Sun years, cut by Lewis as either demos, B-sides, or album tracks that didn't make it or ended up as filler. They may have been for anyone looking for the singles, but as the music reveals, there isn't a weak joint here -- well, except for the "Marine Hymn." The rest is a wildly eclectic set of standards, rock, blues, and country tunes. It kicks off with a stellar rockabilly reading of "Deep Elem Blues," and is followed by one of Lewis' least celebrated but brilliant originals "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane" (maybe because it's a gospel tune done Pentecostal style). But there's so much here, like Hoagy Carmichael's "Hong Kong Blues," Junior Parker's "I've Been Twistin'," fellow Sun Records alumni Charlie Rich's "Sail Away," an alternate take of "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin' On," Owen Bradley's "Night Train to Memphis," and a truly in the red version of Luther Dixon's "Lovin' Up a Storm." Highly recommended.
