WINGS OF STEEL - Winds of time (2025)

Some detect influences from Queensrÿche in Wings of Steel's music, while others hear elements of Crimson Glory or Riot V. There are also references to Judas Priest and Helloween. The American band, founded in 2019, has consistently strived to develop its own style, based on classic heavy metal, yet enriched with elements of power and speed metal. The band quickly gained recognition, impressing with their live performances and successful debut. Now, they're following suit – their second studio album will be released on October 17th via High Roller Records. It's a date heavy metal fans should remember.

At first glance, it's clear that the band's lineup remains unchanged, as does their style. However, true to the genre's style, the second album is faster, stronger, and more mature. The new release offers much more than their debut, and at times borders on perfection. The striking cover, refined sound, and mature, well-thought-out material are eye-catching. This is an album brimming with diversity, energy, and atmosphere, leaving no room for boredom.

Much of this is due to the talented musicians. Guitarist Parker Halub impresses with his technique, ingenuity, and attention to detail—his riffs and solos are pure magic. The band's star, however, remains vocalist Leo Unnermark, whose upper-register flourishes are reminiscent of Michael Kiske. He's a true wizard, giving the band a unique character.

The album opens with a bold, dynamic colossus – " Winds of Time ." Instead of an epic intro, we get an immediate dose of fire and energy. It's no wonder this track was chosen to promote the album – it perfectly defines Wings of Steel's style. The even more dynamic " Saints and Sinners" exudes freshness and power, showcasing the influence of power metal. " Crying " begins with a beautiful guitar intro, reminiscent of Iron Maiden's golden days, before seamlessly transitioning into more rock-oriented territory with a chorus that nods to the 1980s.

The six-minute " Burning Sands " showcases what Primal Fear should sound like today – echoes of Judas Priest, and the whole thing sparks with energy. " To Die in Holy Water ," on the other hand, is sublime and melodic, with the drummer shining through. " Lights Go Out" surprises with its subdued, darker atmosphere, highlighting the band's versatility.

The album's next track, " We Rise," unfolds slowly but quickly reveals an epic character, full of marching tempos and guitar flourishes reminiscent of Dio or Manowar. It's the quintessence of classic heavy metal. Finally, we have " Flight of the Eagle ," the longest, atmospheric, and emotional track, in which Wings of Steel reveals their more rock-oriented side.

"Winds of Time" is an album brimming with passion, ideas, and emotion, proving that heavy metal still has much to offer. It's a maturely conceived, diverse, and impeccably executed work. The band has created an album that will be talked about for a long time to come. For many fans, it's a serious contender for album of the year.
